Value-based, patient-centred care has been acclaimed by clinicians and Healthcare Economists internationally. Achievement of this system requires a paradigm shift in thinking, organisation and training.
Founders of ICS, Fiona Pieterse and Vanessa Pickford have entered this space and been instrumental in pioneering the ERAS Integrated Clinical Pathway in South Africa. Their combination of expertise, professionalism and nursing care has seen hundreds of patients shepherded through complex surgery as they coordinated the functions of the multidisciplinary team.
As Registered Nurses, they are acutely aware of the flawed nature of the Healthcare architecture in South Africa. As such, they are committed to being actively involved in rebuilding a solid foundation through a combination of education and training of healthcare workers, and forging new structures in Healthcare by building, training and sustaining collaborative multidisciplinary teams.
As Healthcare begins at home, Fiona and Vanessa have tailored CPR and First Aid courses to meet every training requirement. These courses are designed to ensure optimum pre-hospital care, to manage injuries and maximise the patient’s chances of survival.

Who We Are
Vanessa is passionate about both healthcare and education. 10 of her 25-years of nursing experience have been devoted to training and development in Healthcare. As such, she is perfectly positioned as COO of the Training Division of ICS, as included in her responsibilities is the planning and implementation of training programmes. Keeping her hand in with patient care, Vanessa also assists with the ERAS Programme.
She has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with Honors in Clinical Education from UCT. She started her nursing career at Mediclinic Constantiaberg, working in first the Medical Ward, and then Haematology Unit where she fulfilled the role of Unit Manager.
Whilst working in ICU, Emergency and Maternity Units, Vanessa became aware of the lack of CPR and First Aid knowledge held by the average South African. To this end, in 2007 she obtained accreditation with the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa, American Heart Association and International Trauma Life Support, which led to the formation of Integrated Clinical Solutions in 2014.
In her spare time, Vanessa enjoys running. She also gets her fair share of First Aid experience in raising her three sons.
The backbone of her career rests on 30-years’ experience as an Intensive Care Nurse. She holds Diplomas in General Nursing, Midwifery and Intensive Care Nursing Science. Her entrepreneurial interests led her to complete a Diploma in Business Administration at Varsity College in 2006.
She has led several initiatives in Healthcare training, including being instrumental in commencing ICU Nursing training in Private Hospitals during the 1980’s
With the commencement of the Best Care Always and Anti-biotic Stewardship Campaign in hospitals, Fiona brought her experience as a Project Leader to the fore and was an integral part of launching these projects at Mediclinic Constantiaberg
Her passion for bringing about change in Healthcare practices led her to co-founding Integrated Clinical Solutions in 2014, which is a platform to empower an evolving society through customised programs and pioneering clinical pathways in healthcare.
She gains deep satisfaction in mentoring the next generation in Healthcare.
In her spare time, Fiona enjoys gardening, reading and writing poetry.
