Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
ERAS is a multimodal perioperative care pathway designed to achieve early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery. Multi-Disciplinary teams are able to re-examine traditional practices and replace them with evidence based best practices. When implemented, proven results show improved quality of care, i.e. reduced number of complications, length of hospital stay and re-admissions; increased efficiency resulting in reduced healthcare costs while increasing patient and staff satisfaction.
The World-wide ERAS community affords access to international standards of care across several surgical disciplines. The data base allows for collection of real time data that measures compliance and outcomes.
Fiona Pieterse and Vanessa Pickford are accredited by Encare (ERAS international commercial oversight body) as ERAS Nurse Co-Ordinators who, together with Dr Ravi Oodit as ERAS SA Team Leader, have successfully launched ERAS in Colo-rectal surgery in the Dr Matley and Partners practice at Life Vincent Pallotti, Life Kingsbury and Mediclinic Constantiaberg Hospitals. They have also been instrumental in establishing ERAS in Colo-rectal surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town.
ICS has the infra-structure to deliver ERAS Implementation and Training in the following surgical disciplines nation-wide
- Head and Neck
- Breast reconstruction
The ERAS Implementation and Training Programme has been accredited by the University of Cape Town as a Level 1 course for 20 CPD points.
